This workshop has a specific focus on the foundational years of child development from newborn to two years.   It will provide families and carers with a clear framework of the important milestones that encompass this stage and provide reasoning and evidence as to why this stage is the springboard of all future development. It will focus on all aspects of development including:  physical, communication, cognitive and the social and emotional areas of infant development.

The first half of the workshop will be presented by Dr. Megan Chapman, Senior Clinical Psychologist and Coordinator of the Infant Mental Health Program at the Royal Children’s Hospital. Megan will discuss the impact of early hospitalisation on babies and their families, focusing on early attachment and infant mental health. She will explore ways to help work through early experiences, and come out stronger and more connected.

The second half of the workshop will focus on cognitive development, physical development and speech development. This part of the afternoon will be presented by Early Childhood Early Intervention. You will learn what to expect in the areas of gross and fine motor skill development, along with the development of speech and communication.  This session will provide strategies and techniques for parents and carers to consider and implement at home with their child in order to enhance development in these key areas.

What will be covered?

  • Infant mental health
  • Managing emotional response to diagnosis
  • Gross and fine motor skill development
